Holiday Cottage in Morwenstow, Cornwall, Burridge House
Burridge House is the original farmhouse of Burridge Farm. It became derelict and used as a barn in about 1930. It was restored in 1990 but still retains the character of the original house with its thick stone walls, deep windowsills and some exposed beams upstairs. The house nestles into the south-facing slope with panoramic views from the terrace across the valley. Birdsong is the predominant sound with sheep and cattle and the occasional putter of a tractor. On still evenings you can often hear the surf on the beach at Duckpool, a delightful two mile walk down the valley.
The north Cornish coast is stunning and unspoilt here. The cliffs are some of the highest and most rugged in the country with spectacular views along the coastline and across to Lundy Island. There are circular walks taking in both the cliffs and wooded valleys and an abundance of bird life to watch. Sandy beaches are two miles away.
The large fully fitted kitchen has an oak table and chairs with matching sideboard. There is a cooker, dishwasher, microwave oven and fridge/freezer. The crockery is bone china and there is a wide range of kitchen utensils. The loo/utility room has a washing machine and tumble dryer.
There are two sitting rooms which is great for the younger members of the party who want to get away from their parents. The main room has three settees, a nest of tables and a pine dresser with books, maps and guides of the area. The wide screen television receives freeview satellite programmes. There is also a DVD player and a small selection of films. For chilly months there is a wood burning stove to supplement the central heating. French doors open out on to the terrace.
The other sitting room is filled with bean bags and cushions and a selection of old fashioned board games and books. The television receives freeview programmes independently and there is also a DVD player. The feedback is that the youngsters love ‘their’ room and heap up the bean bags and cushions to watch their favourite programmes and avoid the boring conversation of their parents!
Upstairs there are four good-sized bedrooms three with lovely views to the south. The master bedroom is dual aspect and has an en suite bathroom with bath and separate shower. The cast iron bed is a luxurious 6’ feet across. There is a similar 6’ bed in another room and two further rooms each with two 3’ beds. All bedrooms have bedside tables, dressing table with mirror and chair or stool and ample wardrobe space. The spacious family bathroom has bath with shower and plenty of shelf space.
The terrace runs the width of the house on the south side and so benefits from sun most of the day. There is a hardwood table and chairs with umbrella and a barbecue. This is the ideal place for breakfast on sunny mornings and Champagne on balmy evenings. The gardens are laid mainly to lawn and shrub borders and extend to about two acres. There is a wide gravel entrance with plenty of parking.
Please note: The house is on different levels so inside there are steps and stairs in many places. Outside there is a very small unfenced pond. Also due to the natural rock formation there are outcrops of uneven bedrock just off the terrace. Therefore the house may not be suitable for those of reduced mobility or for very young children.
