THE CHALET
The chalet itself, which was entirely rebuilt and greatly enlarged
in 1997-98, offers accommodation that is generously
appointed, exceptionally private, super-comfortable and cosy in
all seasons, and spacious enough to banish that otherwise
familiar parental dread of rainy days. The chalet houses up to 6
people (double-bedded main bedroom; bunk-bedded second
bedroom/ playroom; pull-down double bed in the living room,
cunningly masquerading as a bookshelf). The star attraction is
the large (4m x 5m) living/dining-room with its varnished
timber floor, triple-aspect picture windows that truly merit the
name, leather sofa and armchair, wood-burning stove, dining
table for 6, and French doors giving onto a full-length verandah
complete with table and chairs. Amenities include multi-channel
digital TV (free-to-air), DVD, and portable radio/tape/CD-
player; cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine, kettle,
toaster, proper crockery and cutlery (not odds and ends!!),
stainless-steel cookware, 1½-bowl sink, ample cupboards and
work-surfaces; travel cot and high chair; instant shower plus loo
and basin (en suite), and bath plus loo and basin (main
bathroom); electric heating in all rooms (thermostatic in
bedrooms and living/dining room); double-glazing and state-
of-the-art thermal insulation throughout; an efficient and
flexible hot-water system (electric, plus wood-stove back-
boiler in winter); extractor fans in kitchen and bathrooms. All
you need to bring with you is linen (duvet covers, towels, tea-
towels etc.), and kitchen and bathroom 'consumables'. There are
even books to hand for rainy spells…
THE ROSELAND
The Roseland Peninsula on Cornwall's south coast — designated
an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' — is one of England's
most special yet least known places, a spectacular motley of
seascapes and riverscapes, woodland and fields, winding lanes
and ancient churches, much of it in the careful guardianship of
either the National Trust or the Marquess of Falmouth. At the
very narrowest point of the peninsula, where Porth Creek and
the sea almost cut it in two, Towan Beach Chalet sits amidst
greenery with its own little wood spilling down to the creek on
one side, and the sea within earshot on the other. There are
several very lovely, and very different, beaches within easy reach
—the nearest, Towan Beach itself, is only some 300 yards away.
The beaches are never crowded, even at the peak of summer,
and they are spectacularly clean, thanks to a twice-daily
scouring by Atlantic tides. The place is ideal for walkers and
artists, fauna-fanciers and star-gazers, and not least for those
who love mucking about in boats (the chalet comes complete
with a rowing dinghy, and all manner of other craft—sail and
power—can be readily hired in the area). There are numerous
castles, stately homes and famous gardens etc. within a radius
of ten or twenty miles, not least the astonishing 'Lost Gardens of
Heligan', and the even more astonishing 'Eden Project'; for
children there are theme-parks and steam trains, riding stables
and a seal sanctuary, and countless other attractions. It is in fact
a seventh heaven for children, not least around the chalet itself:
small children can tumble around on the grass in complete
safety; older children have a whale of a time down at Porth
Creek or in our patch of woodland, or amongst the sands and
rock-pools of Towan Beach, or in amongst the neighbouring
chalets with other visiting children (the four chalets nearby tend
to be occupied throughout the main school-holiday season; at
other times, however, you may well have the entire site to
yourselves).
